Sep iri 세피리 is one of important musical instruments for such traditional repertoires as Hyŏnakyŏngsan hoesang 鉉樂靈山會相 Ch ŏnnyŏnmanse 千年萬歲, and Mannyŏn changhwanjigok 萬年長歡之曲, which have been performed at the National Center for Korean Traditional Performing Arts (Kungnip Kugagwŏn 國立國樂院). To the best of the author s knowledge, it is one of significant problems to be urgently solved that there has been several differences between current sep iri notation and it performing practice. This study aims, therefore, at investigating the current sep iri notation and its performing practice, and at presenting an ideal sep iri notation which accords with sep iri notation and its performing practice. This work is based upon the panyŏp 半葉 piece in ujo 羽調 and kyemyŏnjo. 界面調, which is one of the present kagok 歌曲 repertoires. In light of our intensive examination, it may be concluded that the present investigation can be summarized by the following three points: First, the current sep irl performing practice should be based upon the corrected performance practice of sep iri. Second, according to the author s examination, there are no differences between ujo and kyemyŏnjo repertoires. Third, the current sep iri notations used by p iri 피리 players have to be corrected by the conclusion of this study.
