Analysis of the Structure and Characteristics of Royal Court Banquets Seem Through 『Kisa Chinpyri Chinchan ŭigwe 己巳進表裹進饌儀軌』

『Kisa Chinpyori Chinchan ŭigwe 己巳進表裹進饌儀軌』 (1809), found in the British Library, is a treatise documenting the Sixtieth Birthday Banquet of King Sunjo s mother, a Su-concubine. Its existence is extraordinary in that the Panchado 班次圖 is a colored painting unlike any other court banquet record. The list of pieces perfoaned and the specifics of the orchestra are recored in detail. Moreover, since the banquet is on a smaller scale than the average royal sixtieth birthday banquet, 『Kisa Chinpyori Chinchan ŭigwe』 gives us a greater insight into the events surrounding the royal banquets. This article intends to explore the events surrounding the court banquets in the early 19th century. I have examined the nature of the court banquet which is recorded in 『Kisa Chinpyori Chinchan ŭigwe』 in tenns of the number of orchestras and its perfonnance practices. I have arrived at the following conclusions : (1) The purpose of the court banquet dictate the nmuber of ceremonies and the inclusion of Chŏngjae (呈才 : dance). In modest banquets such as the Su-concubine s birthday banquet, the Chŏngjae is excluded and is limited to two ceremonies. (2) Su-concubine s sixtieth birthday was composed of two ceremonies, Chinpyori and Chinchan. A single orchestra, Chiŏjŏng-hŏn ga 殿庭軒架, perfonns during the Chinpyori 進表裹 as poetry and cloths are presented. In the Chinchan 進饌, two orchestras, Chŏnjŏng-hŏn ga and Tŭng-ga 登歌 provide the music as the food and drinks are presented. (3) Compared to the continual repetition of one piece in Chinpyori, eighteen different pieces are performed during the Chinchan. (4) Today, the orchestration of court pieces is fixed in its performance practices. However, during the late Chosŏn Dynasy, the orchestration of a few of the Chinchan pieces varied greatly: some were written for a wind ensemble and others for wind and string ensemble. (5) The orchestration of Tŭngga and Chŏnjŏng-hŏn ga in Chinpyori and Chinchan has remained intact since the reign of King Sukjong. This orchestration has been applied to the court banquet musk of King Kojong.
