Shoso-in has a collection of 23 kinds of musical instruments such as lute, stringed instruments, flute, four-stringed lute, wind instrumensts and harps. It has been widerly asserted among the Japanese scholars that the musical instruments kept in Shoso-in, except very a few, were made in Japan as well as Tang of China, without any hard evidences. This paper attempt to identify the country where the musical instruments are believed to have been made. The old Korea dispatched experts on musical instruments to China and gave a lead to the makers of Chinese musical instruments. The musical instruments of the old Korea were highly regarded among China and Japan. Among the patterns of the musical instruments of Shoso-in, those of bisymmetry, paired phoenixes, paired dragons, paired stayed birds, paired flying birds, Kanŭngbin ga-bird, fiery horse, legendary fairy with a Jute, clounds, flowers, flower-bearing plants and beaded-rings appear frequently. And the patterns are virtually identical to those often appeared on Shilla roof tiles and bricks in the archaeological excarvation sites in Korea.
