The String Quartet #2 Amitayus Buddha is written using a technique that reflects the special characteristics of Korean traditional music. Its melodies and even its harmonies are based on the kyemyŏn scale of southern Korean folk music, and its rhythms are based on the changdan or rhythmic cycles of traditional music. Even its form is based on traditional music, and the piece achieves a very natural synthesis of Korean musical elements with those of the West.
