The late Chosun period boasted of her culture. It, also known as Chosun Chunghwaism, changed several aspects in governmental policy on music. Regulating the ceremonial music rather than importing new materials or re-defining music theory are good examples of Chunghwaism. Especially, the theoretical writing of the scholar-king Chŏngjo with Sŏ myŏng-ŭng represented the higher goal of Chosun, establishing her status as the cultural center of East Asian culture. The time was right after the fall of Chinese Ming Dynasty; the Chosun asswned the responsibility of becoming the center for Confucian.ism. What was considered to be the most ideal music, that is, to re-discover the music of the past, was emphasized during this period. On the contrary, some scholars from the northern tradition who had been to the Ching china searched for a new type of music and civilization, and adopted yangŭm as a result. This paper deals with two contrasting efforts by two groups in the late Chosun period.
