The twelve extant gyeonggi japga were made by the professional singers who sang gagok and gasa and were merchants and industrialists in the mid 19th century. They made them imitating pansori which was prevalent all over the country, in the style of gasa which they were enjoying. The twelve gyeonggi japga may be divided into 4 groups according to the words and melody style. The ujo part of pansori and danga shows the musical exchange between the south and the north. It is thought to be an influence of gasa that lyrical jinyang part of pansori has more ujo or pyeongjo than gyemyeonjo. Danga was originally sung in pyeongjo mode not in gyemyeonjo mode. Singing danga in gyemyeonjo mode was begun by Yi Dong-baek. If we call danga gasa sung by the pansori singer gyeonggi japga may be called pansori sung by the professional gasa singer . gyeonggi japga is a popular variation of gasa and is another kind of popular song which pansori vogue brought. To sum up, gyeonggi japga began to develop from the gasa style in the 19th century and they were fixed in twelve like today in early 20th century. They were the popular songs which common people sang imitating pansori.
