The history of Korean traditional instruments are long and they have had constant development fitting with the circumstance. But the systematic and scientific research for developing Korean traditional instruments has little performed yet. In the west, they have continued studying on their traditional instruments, and today they use the results from their research for producing instruments of better quality. If the achievements of research on Korean traditional instruments are accumulated, we may be able to get further understanding on them. Those achievements will also contribute to retain the originality of the instruments. String instruments are composed of strings which generate sound, the parts which deliver the sound to resonance board, and resonance board. The nature of each part of the three are very important and the relationships among them are also important. To get better understanding on the string instruments, research on the characteristics of each part should be carried out before experimenting the acoustic features of completed instruments. In this thesis, the acoustic characteristics of strings are studied as the first step of research on Korean traditional string instruments. The followings are measured for the research. 1. tension and gauge of the strings 2. vibrating waves which vibrate the bridges 3. duration of the sound 4. overtone structure The characteristics of gayageum strings proved to be not so far from the general theory on vibration of general strings, from the result of the research. gayageum strings, however, have some unique nature, different from that of western string instruments. The results attained in this research can be applied to other Korean traditional string instruments, though the research was carried out just on sanjo gayageum The results attained in this research can be used as the basic materials for further study on the whole part of gayageum including bridges and resonance chamber.
