This paper investigates the life and the achievements of Pak Hyogwan. Pak Hyogwan s ja is known to be Gyeonghwa and his ho, Unae. He was a gagaek (a classical music singer) during the reign of King Cheoljong and Gojong of the Joseon period. His birth and death dates are uncertain. However, according to Geumokchongbu, written by An Minyeong, a student of Pak who spent time with him for sixty years, one can assume that Pak was born in the year 1800 during the Joseon period and lived for ninety years through 1890. A book describes that his ancestral home is known to be Chungju, but I was not able to doublecheck. His government post is known to be dongchu, which refers to dongjijungchubusa, but it is assumed that he did not actually held any government posts, so dongchu may be a title addressed by his colleagues. He enjoyed living a poetical life, forming groups such as noingye and seungpyeonggye with people who had excellent intellectuality and talent. In particular, the seungpyeonggye, formed during the reign of King Gojong and was active from 1864 (Gongjong 1) through 1907 (Yunghui 1), was a group for the gageak during the late Joseon period. The achievements of Pak Hyogwan is as follows. First, as the master of kagok singing at that time, he contributed to the development of elegant music by transmitting his music well to his students. Second, he was a writer of sijo, which he wrote fourteen in total. Third, his greatest achievement was that in 1876 (Gojong 13) he compiled Kagokweollyu with his student An Minyeong. He compiled the kagok existing until then, established the singing theory for elegant musicians, and left an invaluable resource for the kagok singing.
