Research on the formative period of the sanjos of the danso, tungso, and piri--which are representative vertical wind instruments of Korea--is rare. This scarcity has been attributed to the lack of related materials and experts in this research field. However, the second volume of the collected materials of Korean music activities during the Japanese colonial period entitled A Catalogue of Broadcasted Korean Music Pieces by Kyeongseong Broadcasting System (『Kyeongseongbangsongguk Kugakbangsonggokmongnok』) was recently published, and the index of the volume was also issued. Thus, it is now possible to obtain important information of the formative period of the sanjos of danso, tungso and piri. Through phonograph recordings and other types of materials, the author re-examined the formative period of the three kinds of sanjos and reached a conclusion as follows. First, danso sanjo was formed not only by Jeon Chu-san but also by other performers of danso sanjo, who greatly contributed to its creation. It is assumed that danso sanjo was popular since the mid 1930s. Second, the contributions of Jeong Hae-si and Yu Dong-cho to the formation of tungso sanjo should be reconsidered. Yu Dong-cho is known to be the person to have formed the tungso sanjo. However, Jeong Hae-si issued a recording earlier than Yu Dong-cho, and similar melodic lines exist between the two sanjos. Therefore, it can be assumed that the tungso sanjo was formed before the period when the musicians performances were aired on the radio, and the first record of the tungso sanjo was issued. Third, piri sanjo was already formed by Han Seong-jun in the 1930s, and it was performed in the form of sanjo ensemble in the early 1940s by Ji Yeong-hui. From the latter information, it is clear that the piri performance, offered in the sanjo ensemble performance during the Japanese colonial period, contributed to the maturity of piri sanjo.
