Even though research on Sakdaeyeop and gagok has been accumulated to a certain extent, most of the articles has discussed the changes of the melodic lines. However, the important changes that Sakdaeyeop underwent during the early and the late eighteenth century were related to the social changes at those period. Therefore, examining the changes of the melodic lines within the time frame of the late Joseon period without considering the social aspects is problematic in properly understanding the meaning of its changes. In the case of Sakdaeyeop, the differences of Sakdaeyeop shown among the seventeenth, eighteenth, and the nineteenth centuries reveal that the late Joseon period should not viewed as a single time frame. Considering the changes of the melodic lines and the characteristics of the compilation of the musical notations, until the seventeenth century Sakdaeyeop was administered by the music institute Jangagwon and was performed at official occasions. In the eighteenth century, Sakdaeyeop was not performed at official sites but at private sites and was performed for self-complacency and to chase worries away by retired officials who are financially affluent. In the late eighteenth century, Sakdaeyeop was transformed to entertainment music for the privileged and the rich, and the appreciators thought on the music became conventional. Such characteristic changes were not limited to Sakdaeyeop but were also found in literature and fine arts at those periods. The changes revealed in various art genres were influenced by the transformation of social and economic situations then.
