Life and Song of Sim Whayeoung

본고는 심화영의 대담자료 정리를 기본 자료로 하여 충청 지역의 명인 심화영의 생애와판소리의 특성에 대해 정리한글이다. 심화영은 20세기 전반 충청지방의 판소리와 가야금병창 및 산조의 명인 심정순의 둘째 딸로, 부친의 음악 자산을 물려받았다. 광대의 딸이라는 이유로 주변의 천대를 감내해야했던 그녀는 스스로 기생을 길을 선택, 20세부터 33세까지 청진권번에서 기생으로 살았다. 그러다 해방 무렵 서산으로 돌아와 혼인한 이후에는 음악활동을 접고 평범한 아낙으로 지내다가, 구순이 거의 다 되어갈 무렵 세상에 나와 승무로 충청남도 무형문화재로 지정되었으며, 중고제 판소리를 보유한 마지막 인물로 평가받고 있다. 오랜 기간 음악 활동을 하지 않아 그녀의 음악적 수준은 그리 높지 않다. 그러나 다른 이에게 노래나 기악을 배운 경험이 없기에 오히려 순수한 충청지역 음악을 보유하고 있다고 할 수 있다. 때문에 그녀의 판소리는 심정순에게서 발견할 수 있는 충청 지역의 판소리특성이 그대로 남아 있다. 뿐만 아니라 판소리가 세련된 기교로 다듬어지고 정교해지지않은 덕에, 즉흥적인 요소 및 선율을 구사하는 기본 원리들에 의해서 이루어지고 있다고 하겠다. 이에 의하면 기본적인 호흡의 원리에 따라 선율이 구성되고 있고, 노래와 아니리(말로 하는 것)의 넘나듦이 자유로우며 처음과 끝을 힘 있게 분명히 함으로서 판소리를 완성시켜 나간다. 심화영의 판소리에서 발견한 이러한 원리 들은 비단 그녀의 판소리에서 뿐 아니라, 이를 토대로 좀 더 전문적으로 다듬어진 다른 창자들의 판소리에서도 적용될 수 있을 것이다. 그리고 기본 선율의 구성 원리에서 어떻게 점점 전문적인 판소리로 세련화 되어 가는지에 대해서도 언급할 수 있으리라 기대한다.

Sim Whayeoung was born as the second daughter of Sim Jeongsun, a master in Pansori in Chungcheong region, Gayageum chorus and Sanjo in the early part of the 20th century, inheriting the musical asset of her father. She had to endure the cold reception from her neighbors since she was a daughter of a musician, chose the path to gisaeng(a singing and dancing girl) for herself, and lived such a life from when she was 20 years old till when she was 33 years old at Cheongjin area. However, she came back to Seosan around the liberation time, got married, stopped the musical activities and lived as a normal wife. When she nearly became 90 years old, she stepped out and was designated as an intangible cultural asset in seungmu(Buddhist dance). She has been evaluated as the last person who retained the Junggoje Pansori. Since she did not do a musical activity for a long time, her musical standard was not that high. Nevertheless, she had the purely Chungcheong region s music since she did not have any experience of learning songs or musical instrument from others. Subsequently, her Pansori exactly has the feature of Chungcheong region s Pansori which could be found in Sim Jung-Soon. In addition, since Pansori was not refined nor corrected in a refined technique, it can be said to have been made by fundamental principles which adopted an improvised element and melody. According to it, the melody is composed of in accordance with the basic principle of breath . The interchange of song and Aniri(Doing with words) is liberal. Pansori is completed by having a clear beginning and end. Such principles found in Sim Whayeoung s Pansori can be applied to her Pansori as well as other singers Pansori which was refined in a more professional manner. And it is expected to stipulate how a more professional Pansori is refined from a formation principle of basic melody.
