국악기 현의 제조 현황 및 표준화

Production Process and Standardization of the String of Korean Traditional Musical Instrument

국악기의 대중화와 세계화를 위한 우선 과제로 국악기의 표준화를 꼽을 수 있다. 국악기 중 현악기의 표준을 위해서는 가장 기초적이고 중요한 현의 표준이 우선되어야 한다. 현악기의 소리 발생과정에서 현은 음을 발생시켜주는 근원이 되기 때문이다. 외부의 힘이 처음 현을 울려 브릿지를 통해 울림통이 진동하고 그 소리가 사람들에게 전해지는 것이다. 이러한 이유로 현악기에서 현은 음색을 결정하는 중요한 요인 중에 하나이다. 또한 우리 음악의 대표적인 특징인 농현을 제대로 구현하기 위해서는 현의 제작과정과 물리적 특성이 중요하다. 예를 들어 제작과정에서 현을 많이 꼬면 현이 금방끊어지게 되고, 너무 잘 늘어나 음정을 맞추기 어려운 문제가 있다. 반면 현을 적게 꼬면 현의 탄력이 적고 잘 늘어나지 않아 농현이 잘 되지 않는다. 그렇기 때문에 국악기 현의 강도, 신도, 꼬임수 등 물리적 특성이 연주와 직결된 요인이라고 할 수 있다. 이와 같은 요인은 제작과정에서 결정되며, 제작과정과 물리적 특성은 결국 국악기 현의 품질을 결정한다. 따라서 본고에서는 국악기 현의 표준화를 위한 기초 연구인 국악기 현의 제조 현황과 그에 따른 표준화 방안에 대하여 살펴보고자 한다. 국악기 현의 제조과정은 130중의 명주실 원사를 준비하여 현의 굵기에 따라 합사한다. 합사한 명주실을 온도가 높은 물에 적신 후 연사기에 걸어 하연과 상연을 하여 꼰다. 현 제작시 중요한 점은 30~50m의 거리를 두어 적당한 장력을 주며, 회전수와 시간을 잘 조절하는 것이다. 이 때 결정되는 굵기나 꼬임수 등이 결국 현의 품질을 좌우하는데, 보통 제작자의 오랜 경험으로 쌓은 기준에 의해 육안이나 감으로 조절한다. 꼬아진 현은 나무방망이에 감은 후 삶아 연고정을 시킨다. 이렇게 제작되는 국악기 현의 표준화를 위해서는 무엇보다 현의 물리적 특성의 조사가 선행되어야 한다. 먼저 섬도, 꼬임수, 인장강도, 신도, 탄성율 등 현의 물성 값을 조사하고, 이를 바탕으로 음향적 특성을 살펴 연관성을 찾고, 연주자 평가가 뒤따른다면 좀 더 객관적인 기준을 마련할 수 있겠다. 둘째, 국악기 현의 표준화에 따라 반드시 이루어져야 하는 것이 포장 및 표시 규격화일 것이다. 국악기 현의 특성을 파악하기 위해 반드시 알아야 할 요소를 꼽아 그것을 명시하고 판매해야 한다. 그러기 위해서는 앞서 말한 국악기 현의 특성 연구결과에 따라 완성된 현에 대한 정확한 측정후 그 결과를 포장에 표시해야 하겠다.

The standardization of Korean traditional musical instrument is taken as top priority in promoting the wide-ranging use of Korean traditional musical instrument across the country and the globe. For the standardization of Korean traditional musical instrument, the standardization of stringed instrument should take precedence which is the most fundamental and important. That is because the string of stringed instrument is the fundamental factor to generate the sound. The external force makes the resonance unit vibrate through the bridge and the resultant sound is perceived by human. For that reason, the string in the stringed musical instrument is one of the most important factors that determine the tone of sound. In addition, the production process of string and its physical properties are important if the vibration which characterizes the sound of Korean music is to be realized appropriately. For example, the string will break if it is twisted excessively in the production process. If twisted too much, the string will extend very easily, making the tuning difficult. By contrast, if the sting is not twisted enough, the string will have low elasticity and extendability, making the vibration difficult. Therefore, physical properties of string, such as the strength, extendability, twist, etc, are directly linked to the performance. Those factors are determined in the production process. The production process and the aforesaid factors of string determine the quality of the string of Korean traditional musical instrument. Thus, this study intends to examine the current production processes of the string of Korean traditional musical instrument and the measures for its standardization, which are basic research for the standardization of the string of Korean traditional musical instrument. The string of Korean traditional musical instrument is made with 130 types of silk threads which are combined according to the thickness of string. The combined silk threads are submerged in hot water, and then, are twisted up and down by the thread and yarn twisting machine. The important thing in making the string is to apply appropriate tension by keeping the string 30m to 50m apart from one another, and adjust the rotation and time well. At this time, the thickness, number of twist, etc, determine the quality of string. They are adjusted by naked eye or five senses based on the long experience of the craftsman. The twisted strings are wrapped around wooden club and steamed before being fixed. First, the standardization of the string of Korean traditional musical instrument requires the investigation into the physical properties of string. The physical properties of string such as fineness, number of twist, tensile strength, extendability, elasticity, etc, need to be investigated first, on which basis, the characteristics of sound have to be examined to identify the relationship, and more objective criteria can be established if the evaluation by performer follows. Second, the standardization of the string of Korean traditional musical instrument requires the standardization of packing and size. Factors which are very crucial in determining the characteristics of the string of Korean traditional musical instrument have to be specified. For that, the string produced according to the results of study on the characteristics of the string of Korean traditional musical instrument should be measured accurately and the results of the measurement should be displayed on the package.
