A Conceptual Study of Effectiveness Criteria in Organizational Cybernetics

Organizational effectiveness has been the focus of increasing interest among social scientists as well as organization managers, government officials, and other interested parties. Nevertheless, the theoretical and empirical literatures on the subject are not well developed. There are no well-specified models, and the empirical literature shows little cumulative character. The purpose of this study was to examine the basic concepts and structure of organizational effectiveness criteria from the perspective of Beer’s cybernetic model in which the law of requisite variety is set forth as the basic principle of an adaptive mechanism of organizational systems.
