Mamma Mia has captured the world’s attention through not only the popularity of the musical, but the movie version as well. This work encapsulates the mother-daughter relationship in a comedic environment while incorporating the songs of ABBA. While some features and themes of the work have similar characteristics with existing feminist dramas, there are others that are new: first, is the idea of women seeking an identity; second, is change of the absence of male figures; third, is the acknowledgement of women’s bonds; and fourth, is the musical element. The bond between women and the foundation of women seeking an identity is similar to features of existing feminist dramas. In previous feminist dramas, the presence of males often denotes a negative aspect; however, this work deviates from the norm by having males provide a positive presence. Lastly, the musical elements provide a component different than those of traditional feminist dramas; the music provides a novel method to construct and tell a story, and can be thought of as an innovative voice for feminist dramas. Mamma Mia, as a musical film, is one of the best movies to get the audience to sing, dance, and enjoy the story, all at the same time.
