This treatise intends to find the meaning of Lee-Kwangsu’s short stories written in the 1910’s in novel history. His short stories are devided into three patterns according to the relation between the self (Hero) and the world: The first pattern shows that the self is superior to the world. Only Hŏn-Sin Ja(the victim)belongs to it. On the contrary, the second pattern shows that the world is superior to the self. Most of Lee-Kwangsu s short stories belong to this pattern: MU-JŎNG(Heartlessness), Ŏ-RIN-HEUI-SAENG(Young victim), KIM-GYŎNG, SO-NYŎN-EUI-BI-AE(Sorrow of Boy), YUN-KWANGHO, PANG-HWANG (Wondering). The third is the pattern that the self stands face to face with the world tightly, but the two arrive at a compromise in certain valuable thing in the end. The first half of O-RIN-BOT-E-GE(Letters to young friend)belongs to this pattern. Thus we can say by above results that Lee-Kwangsu’s short stories written in the 1910’s are characterized by the second pattern. Then we can not find this pattern in previous novels and this new trend is based on the tragic worldview. If it is true that modern novel is based on the tragic vision, we can say that Lee-Kwangsu’s short stories are the first examples of modem Korean narrative fiction.
