누가복음 11:5-8 의 ‘한밤중에 찾아옹 친구비유’ 와 관련하여 두 견해가 팽팽하게 대립된다. 무엇보다도 이 비유에서 주인공이 누구얀가 하는 문제가 논쟁의 핵심이다. 이 문제는 이 비유의 주제가 무엇인가 하는 문제와 직결되어 있다. 어떤 학자들은 이 비유의 주인공이 먹을 달라고 요청하는 친구이며, 따라서 이 비유의 주제는 열심히 기도하라는 내용이라고 이해한다. 반면에 다른 학자들은 이 비유의 주인공이 잠을 자다가 떡을 요청받은 사람이며, 비유의 주제는 하나님의 신실함이라고 주장한다. 이러한 문제를 해결하기 위해서는 11:8 의 이해가 중요하며, 특별히 개역개개정성경에서 ‘간청함’으로 번역된 헬라어 단어의 의미와 소유격 인칭 대명사가 지칭하는 대상을 파악해야 한다. 8절 본문에 대한 면밀한 분석과 문법적 고찰은 이러한 문제를 해결할 수 있는 단서를 제공한다. 소유격 인칭 대명사는 집에서 자던 친구를 가리키며, 헬라어 단어의 의마는 ‘부끄러움 없음’ 이어서 집에 있던 친구가 부끄러움을 당하지 않기 위해서 일어나 떡을 줄 것이라는 교훈을 본문이 담고 있음을 파악하게 된다. 이 때 집 주인과 하나님은 비교되기보다는 대조되어서 하나님의 너그러운 성품이 극단적으로 강조된다. 결국 이 비유는 기도를 열심히 하라는 교훈을 준다기보다는 기도에 응답하기를 기뻐하시는 하나님의 성품을 보여주어 열심히 기도해야 하는 근거를 제시한다. 이러한 해석은 누가복음 18장의 ‘불의한 재판관 비유’에도 동일하게 적용할 수 있으며, 그래서 하나님과 불의한 재판관이 대조되고 있다고 이해할 때 그 비유의 의미를 올바르게 파악할 수 있다.

Many scholars regard the parable of the friend at midnight in Luke 11:5-8 as one of the most difficult passages in the New Testament. It is especially hard to determine who the main character is; i.e., the petitioning friend or the sleeping friend . Ambiguity of the meaning of the noun ἀυαίδεια in v.8 intensifies the difficulty of the interpretation. In addition, the relation of the parable to the following verses (especially vv.9-10) draw our attention. Do the parable and vv.9-10 deliver an identical message or two different lessons? Another question arises as to the relationship of this parable to that of the Unjust Judge in Luke 18: 1-8. Do both parables give the same lesson about prayer? A close investigation of The Friend at Midnight demonstrates that the main character of the story is not the petitioner but the friend in bed. Two genitive personal pronouns (αὐτοῡ) in v .8 refer to the awakened friend, and thus the noun ἀυαίδεια signifies shamelessness, resulting in the meaning his(the sleeper s) shamelessness, i.e., for him to avoid shame. However, God is not compared but contrasted with the friend in bed: different from human beings, God responds to the requests of His children in generosity. Whereas the sleeper will help the petitioner in order to avoid shame, God, the father of believers will respond to their petitions generously. This interpretation is strengthened by the passive verbs in v.9, which should be understood as divine passive. In sum, the parable of the friend at midnight in Luke 11 as well as that of the Unjust Judge in 18 are about the character of God who is eager to answer the prayers of His children.
