The paper aims at representing the concept of authority in terms of its bases and by clarifying the relation between power and authority. Even more important is to catch the nature of authority in accordance with human models (rational-economic man, social man, and self-actualizing man). With the help of major journals and books conconcerned, the researcher has found a number of facts. Among them the most important are as follows. First, major dimensions of authority corresponding to the respective human model are represented as. summarized forms in figure Ⅱ. Second, as the most influential authonity base changes from position to function, the explanatory power of authority increases. Third, taking advantage of having defined authority from power (authority as legitimized or institutionalized power), he who studies authority may use research materials about power.
