An Effect of Art Class by the Free-semester System on Competence of Culture and Arts of Student:

The purpose of this study is to define the effect of art class by the free-semester system on competence of culture and arts of middle school freshman. To design the free-semester system media art program based on design thinking, relative previous studies have been analyzed, and after consultation by education experts, the 12th programhas been composed. 22middle schools in Seoul Gyeonggi, Incheon, Daejeon, and Busan have been selected as trial schools, and amedial art class has been provided to 475 students. As a method of this study, to measure the competence of culture and arts of students, the measurement tool has been developed for pre-/post-evaluation to analyze the result. The index of measurement tool in this study is composed of two upper domains of common competence and culture and arts competence and 18 sub-levels. The sub-levels of common competence are composed of creativity, trouble-shooting ability, self-directing, and goal orientation, and the culture and arts competence is composed of imagination, expression, creativity, media, and aesthetic introspection to have 13 sub-levels such as image composition and integrity. As a result of analyzing the difference between pre- and post- assessment of group homogeneity, the media art class of free-semester system for school education of culture and arts has shown positive effect on improving the overall competence of culture and arts, creativity, problem-solving ability, self-directing, and goal orientation ofmiddle school students. Through the result of this study, it is determined that the free-semester systemmedia art class based on design thinking has granted a positive effect on competence of culture and arts of middle school freshman. The media art program of this study is expected to be helpful for the actual education, and it is also expected to be extended progressively through art class, free-semester system, and creative experience activity.
