김수행 교수의 연구 및 저술활동, 그리고 대중활동에서 일관된 것은 한국사회에 마르크스 이론을 보급하고 대중화하는 것이었다. 특히 『자본론』의 번역과 대중화 작업이 그 중심을 이루었다. 그가 한국사회의 민주화나 소련붕괴 등 세계사적 변화에도 불구하고 흔들리지 않고 이런 작업에 일생을 바친 것은 노동자·민중에 대한 애정에 기초한 가치관 때문이었다. 그는 한때 사회민주주의를 과도적으로 실천적 대안의 하나로 인정했으나 2008년 세계대공황 이후 점차 자본주의 자체를 극복한 ‘자유로운 개인들의 연합’으로 부른 ‘새로운 사회’를 대안으로 제시했다. 그는 마르크스 이론의 보급과 대중화 작업을 더욱 발전시키고 세계자본주의의 현실에 대한 마르크스주의적 분석과 대안을 더욱 발전시킬 것을 과제로 남겼다.

Professor Kim had pursued consistently the popularization of Marx’s theory through his studies, writings and public activities. In particular, the translation and popularization of Marx’s Capital had been at the heart of his works. His value orientation for workers and people had made him devote his life to these works with no disturbance notwithstanding the democratization of the Korean society and great changes in the world like the collapse of the Soviet Union. He once recognized social democracy as one of the practical alternative transitionally, but after the ‘great depression’ in 2008 he suggested gradually ‘new society’ overcoming capitalism itself as the alternative, which he called ‘the association of free individuals’. He left the tasks to us to develop the popularization of Marx’s theory and the Marxist analyses of global capitalism and the alternative to capitalism.
