This study attempts to investigate the relationship between education and politics in Plato’s Republic(Politeia) and examine Plato’s conception of this issue critically. In Plato’s Republic searching for justice(dikaiosyne), a state is just only when the guardians including the rulers who grasp the truths govern, and the education of just state consists in both the selection of would-be guardians and the hard training of them. Plato’s conception of the relationship between education and politics can be defined as a model of elitist collaboration between education and politics. The problems of Plato’s conception of the relationship between education and politics may be divided into the assumptions of this conception and the logics of this conception. The assumptions of this conception, for example, both the state and the human are the same in structure are out of date, rigid and discriminatory. The logics of this conception, for example, the minority of guardians including the rulers have to govern the majority of people are elitist, unequal and irrelevant in most of contemporary democratic states. In spite of these problems, Plato’s conception of the relationship between education and politics can be interpreted as a positive implication to this issue, if we are to remove the elitist character from Plato’s conception of this issue. The collaboration of education and politics derived from Plato may become a theoretical background of our natural faith that we have to both pursuit for some democratic ideals and system in politics and teach them for our children in education.
