In Republic, Plato deals with poetry(poiesis) which represents education in ancient Greece. Poetry in book 2 and 3 is regarded as basic education for guardians, whereas poetry in book 10 is described as harmful and undesirable in the country. These apparent conflicts can be resolved from an educational point of view. In book 2 and 3, poetry as mousikē education aims at immature children and their formation of character. Mousikē education at that time, however, taught immoral and wrong contents and made the students stick to the blind acceptance of knowledge and get dependent attitude by means of mimesis. Thus, to Plato, education of poetry should be only allowed for a limited form, which contains correct contents and encourages children to imitate the good. In Book 10, poetry is extended to all citizens and discussed in light of the educational purpose for the development of reason. According to Plato, mimesis is epistemologically inferior, and a poet who teaches through mimesis has no ability or qualification as a teacher. In addition, mimesis suppresses the logical aspect of the mind and fosters the appetitive one to paralyze rational thinking with emotions from the outside. In Book 2 and 3 poetry is useful as an expedience in the aspect of childhood character formation, but in Book 10, the mimetic nature of poetry is detrimental to the development of reason. The position of poetry in Book 2 and 3 to 10 is consistent with each educational grounds, and shows Plato s perspective on education emphasizing students autonomous attitude and internal state of mind.
