The Materials in the National Archives of Hungary Regarding the Korean War: Data, Information, and Academic Activities

A. M. McDonough once distinguished data, information, knowledge, and wisdom from the “materials” that he called widely in his work, “Information economics”. He classified them into four categories; data, like meaning-excluded records; information, which is meaning-added data; knowledge, which is an extracted value from information; and wisdom, which is patterned knowledge. If this classification can be applied, then the archival documents can belong to the data category because the archival documents themselves stay in that level without any meaning. Moreover, without the accumulation of data, the archival documents cannot be utilized as information, which is the next step. This article deals with the documents from the National Archives of Hungary regarding the Korean War, and the study is based on bibliographical information. This method is extensive and compared to research for the Kyujanggak, this kind of study uses the well-known research method of philology. In addition, the bibliographical information in the archives pertains to basic academic activity.
