약재·먹거리로서 무궁화의 활용 가능성에 대한 연구

A Study of Applicability of Rose of Sharon as Medicine·Food

본고는 나라꽂 무궁화에 대한 국민적 관심을 제고하기 위한 방안의 일환으로 약재·먹거리로서 무궁화의 활용 가능성에 대해 탐구하는 것을 목적으로 집필됐다. 이를 위해 우선 무궁화의 약용성을 우리 한의서인 《향약집성방》, 《동의보감》은 물론, 중국의 《본초강목》 등과 같은 옛 문헌을 통해 살펴보고 무궁화의 약성 효용에 관한 기록이 전해지고 있는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 그리고 무궁화는 꽃·잎·열매·껍질·가지·뿌리 등 모든 부위가 예로부터 약용으로 사용되는 있는 것을 알 수 있었으며, 이를 통해 무궁화는 식용은 물론 약용으로도 활용성이 높다고 판단하였다. 현대 의학에서도 무궁화가 항산화 능력을 가진 사포나린, 노화를 방지하는 신물질 등 유용한 성분을 함유하고 있다는 점이 밝혀지고 이러한 유용한 성분을 바탕으로 다양한 분야에서 특허와 상품으로도 출원·출시되고 있는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 이를 통해 무궁화는 약재·먹거리로서 활용이 가능한 것을 확인할 수 있었으며 다양한 상품으로 부가가치 창출도 가능하다고 판단하였다. 본 연구는 옛 문헌을 통해 무궁화의 약용성을 탐구했다는 점에서 사료적 가치를 가지며, 또한 약재·먹거리를 중심으로 경제적 가치를 포함한 활용성을 탐구함으로써 국민 정서적, 생활 속의 확산 방안에도 기여할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

This paper has been written to study the applicability of Rose of Sharon as medicine and food to reconsider the national interest in Rose of Sharon, the national flower of Korea. For this, the nature of medicine of Rose of Sharon has been found not only from the references of Korean medicine, 《Hyangyakjipseongbang》 and 《Dongeuibogam》, but also from the Chinese references such as 《Bonchogangmok》 to confirm the records about medicinal effects of Rose of Sharon. Moreover, from old times, flower, leaf, fruit, peel, branch, root, and all other parts of Rose of Sharon were known to be used for medicinal purposes. Therefore, Rose of Sharon was confirmed to have much applicability not only as food but also as medicine. In modern medical science, it was found that Rose of Sharon contains useful components such as saponarin with antioxidant and new substances of anti-aging. Based on these useful components, Rose of Sharon is used in various fields and patents and products. These features showed that Rose of Sharon was usable as food and medicine and that Rose of Sharon may be used in various goods for creation of value added. This study is valuable for studying old references to determine the nature of medicine of Rose of Sharon. Furthermore, centered on food and medicine, this study has determined the applicability including economic value to expect its contribution to be extended within people.
