Study on Storytelling Strategy of “King of Mask Singer”

본 연구는 <미스터리 음악쇼 복면가왕>(이하 <복면가왕>)에 나타난 ‘변신’을 중심으로 해당 프로그램의 스토리텔링 전략을 분석하였다. <복면가왕>에는 두 승패와 정체추리의 두 가지 서스펜스가 발생한다. 정체 추리 과정에서 도전자, 판정단, 진행자는 유연하게 트릭스터 역할을 수행하며 시청자의 호기심과 추리 욕구를 유지한다, 도전자는 변신에 성공하면서 기존의 퍼스나와 분리된 새로운 퍼스나를 구성하게 된다. 이들은 기존에 불일치하던 주체아와 객체아 간의 일치, 주체아에 대한 분명한 재확인, 주체아의 성숙 등을 경험한다. <복면가왕>의 홀수회차는 예능적인 재미를, 짝수회차는 음악적인 재미를 전달한다. 도전자의 입장과정에서 제시된 도전자의 캐릭터는 가창과 무대 위 인터뷰 등을 통해 변주되고, <복면가왕>은 공간구성 등 하드웨어를 통해 시청자의 몰입을 유도한다. <복면가왕>의 플롯은 의사비극적 영웅서사, 희극적 자아성장 서사, 도전자 개별 내러티브 등 다층적 스토리로 구성되며, 이는 상황에 따라 다양한 서스펜스를 발생시키며, 소급제시 등으로 참신성을 획득한다. <복면가왕>은 치료적 자서전 콘텐츠로서 변신을 통한 자아찾기 과정을 보여주지만, 현실을 근본적으로 변화시키지 못한다는 점에서 퇴행성을 드러낸다. <복면가왕>은 음악의 소구력 강화와 선순환구조를 통해 음악 프로그램으로서의 변별성을 획득했다. 이러한 강점을 더욱 활용하여 음악적 다양성과 출연자 다양성을 더 대담하게 수용할 필요가 있다. 또한 <복면가왕>의 가장 큰 변별성은 변신과 캐릭터의 고유성에서 비롯된다는 측면에서, 더욱 최적화된 가면 제작을 통해 시청자의 상상력을 불러일으키고, 보다 다양하고 강력한 개성을 지닌 캐릭터들을 구현할 것이 제안된다.

This research analyzes story-telling strategy of a TV show, “King of Mask Singer” focusing on transformation using masks , the key factor of the show. Thorough examination has been conducted to see how the transformation affects and changes interaction among characters and plot, and to analyze which supplementary factors work together with it to induce interaction with viewers. King of Mask Singer is based upon dual factors, competing narratives and identity guess. The viewers of King of Mask Singer equate singers growing through masquerade venture and aberration with themselves. This reveals therapeutic autobiography contents strategy by repeating King of Mask Singer’s simple plot showing singers confess their agony as an entertainer and musician and judges encourage them and they achieve their recognition. The singers of ‘King of Mask Singer’ show dual and fragile characteristics: they are mythical but friendly, go ahead with adventure and escape but at the same time still rely on the power of mask, have tasted liberation through disguise but have to go down back to reality. Their challenge can’t change their reality, which defines it regressive. King of Mask Singer borrows the power of music. it strengthens characters through the power of music, and strengthens the appealing power of music through the character’s disguise and mystery, thus, the show distinguished itself from other music programs by the virtuous cycle of music and characters. Using such strengths, the show needs to more boldly accept diversity in music and contenders. Besides, we should note that the biggest differentiator of “King of Mask Singer” comes from transformation and uniqueness of characters. Understanding this, the show needs more optimized mask-making and establish characters with more variety and stronger personalities to trigger viewers imagination.
