(Developing a Cooperative Pricing Model and Estimating Members’ Welfare in Rice Processing Complex in Korean Agricultural Cooperatives)

The literature on the proper production scale of Korean RPCs (Rice Processing Complexes) have not considered the characteristics of cooperatives as an investor owned firms. This paper develops a cooperative pricing model which characterizes cooperative behaviors of Korean RPCs empirically and to identify the proper production scale of RPCs. The cooperative equilibriums are consistent with several operational objectives (e.g., price maximization, net revenue maximization, member welfare maximization, quantity maximization). The findings reveal that two equilibrium points (price maximization and net revenue maximization) are higher than the current cross-subsidy pricing level. It is found that Korean RPCs have to increase their production scale up to more than 16,000 tons to allow high rice price and associated welfare to member farmers.
