Animal welfare has been a growing concern in the livestock industry. Korea introduced the animal welfare labeling system in 2012. Consumers’ preferences for pork products (belly) with a focus on use of gestation stalls are analyzed using choice experiments in this paper. Voluntary and legislative schemes in producing gestation stalls-free pork are also examined. The results show consumers are more likely to prefer gestation stalls-free pork. However, the null hypothesis that the willingness to pay for gestation stalls-free pork under legislative scheme is higher than that under voluntary scheme is not rejected. This suggests that prohibiting producers from using gestation stalls will not improve consumer welfare in the presence of a labeling scheme. The results of this paper could contribute to government’s policies for animal welfare.
