An analysis on the Characteristics of Farm Households Experiencing Economic Crisis

The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of farm households experiencing chronic crisis and provide its related measures. This paper examines the impacts of farm characteristics on the number of years that experienced deficit or poverty, using the count data model for the period of 2008~2012. To rectify over-dispersion problem of the count data, a negative binomial model is employed. The results find that the ratio of the farm households experienced more than three times the deficit and poverty during the five years are 40.5 percent and 3.8 percent, respectively. The full time farms rather than the part-time farms are more like to fall into economic crisis longer. As farm size is smaller, the number of years experienced farm crisis is more likely to increase. Especially, older farm operators are likely to suffer from long term experience of poverty. For effective policy measures related to farm crisis, income support policies and welfare policies should be appropriately combined, depending on the severity of the economic crisis facing farm households.
