An Evaluation of the Socio-economic Value of Rural Community Business : A case of Gyeongnam-Do

There are rising interests in the role of rural community business as a vehicle for activating rural economy. We estimated the socio-economic values of rural community business using CVM. For this purpose, we interviewed eighty business owners in Gyeongnam province and asked their WTA of its socio-economic value by presenting them a hypothetical situation. Also, we adopted a web-based survey and asked 210 persons of their WTP to a hypothetical situation uploaded on an internet site. In the both survey, we applied double-bounded choice model and drew respondents’ monetary responses for each different initial-bidding amount. We used an interval regression model to estimate the mean of WTA and WTP from respondents monetary responses combined with their socio-economic characteristics. The mean value of WTA was estimated to be 88.9 million won, while the value of WTP was found to be 6,152 won. Although the results were limited to only one regional province, those might provide useful information in designing a government program to support rural community business and establishing any policy related with rural community business, as well.
