문화적 기억과 장소에 관한 성찰

Cultural Memory and Reflection on Location : Focus on A.assmann’s Space of Memory

이 글의 목적은 1980년대 이후 논의된 기억이론을 문화적 기억과 장소를 중심으로 살펴보는 것이다. 이를 위해 먼저 1장에서 기억이론이 대두된 시대적·학문적 배경을 세 가지 측면에서 설명하고 2장에서 기억이론의 전개를 모리스알박스와 알라이다 아스만의 개념을 비교하여 서술할 것이다. 알박스가 기억을 사회적 차원에서 논했다면, 아스만은 이를 문화적 차원으로 비판 및 계승함으로써 문화적 기억 개념을 제시했다. 특히 그녀는 저서 『기억의 공간』에서 기억의 기능을 기술로서의 기억과 활력으로서의 기억, 저장기억과 기능기억으로 구분하여 문화적 기억의 형성 및 변천을 밝히는 이론적 토대를 마련했다. 이를 바탕으로 3장에서는 기억의 매체인 장소에 주목하여, 문화적 기억의 형성과 변천을 자세히 검토할 것이다. 끝으로 4장에서는 아스만의 문화적 기억을 오늘날 현대사회의 정체성 위기에 비추어 성찰하고자 한다.

This article aims to examine the studies of memory in accordance with cultural memory and location since 1980’s. For this purpose, first chapter explains about academic and periodical background raising of memory theories in terms of three sides. Development of memory theory would be described by comparing the concept of Maurice Halbwachs with Aleida Assmann in chapter 2. Halbwachs discussed memory as social level, while Assmann presented cultural memory by criticizing and inheriting it as cultural level. Especially, in her book Space of Memory, she divided the function of memory into memory as “vis” and “ars”, also storage memory and function memory. And she arranged theoretical basis which clarify the formation of cultural memory and change. Based on this, in chapter 3, focusing on location of memory medium, this article examines the formation of cultural memory and change in detail. Finally, chapter 4 tries to reflect the cultural memory of Assmann according to identity crisis of modern society.
