Characteristics of the Farms that Farming successors Exist and its Policy Implications

This paper analyzes the characteristics of the farms that farming successors exist and draws its policy implications based on the results, using 2005 Agricultural Census, especially, focusing on basic farm and operator characteristics such as farm size, farming type and operator age, education level likely to affect the existence of farming successors. This study applies a logistic regression model to the data set to investigate factors that contribute to the existence of farm successors and estimate the existence probabilities for farms with different characteristics. The results show that the existence probability of farm successors initially increase with operator age until it reaches a age but decline after the age. The findings also indicate that the existence probability of farm successors increases, as the possession ratio of farmland is higher. Farms with a relatively large number of family members are more likely to have farm successors.
