Economic Effects of TMR Feeding on Hanwoo Feedlot

This study is to examine the feeding effect of Total Mixed Ration feeding on Hanwoo steers. We examine the differences of meat quality and profitability between TMR feeding and the common feeding form that feeds commercial feed and rice straws during the growing, fattening and finishing. This experimentation shows that TMR feeding has significant effects on both growth rate over the entire breeding periods and the grades of meat quantity and quality. The cost of feeds is higher among other costs, followed by that of calf purchase. Noticeably, cost of feeds is expected to increase as the prices of crops, like corns among others, increase that is mainly due to huge demand of feed corn for bio ethanol. To get competitiveness of Korea Hanwoo industry, farmers would better consider roughages domestically produced and TMR to feed Hanwoo steers, even it has been limited on dairy cow farming.
