Effect of Korea Protected Geographical Indication on the Wholesale Price in Garak Market :

The use of geographical indications may act as a certification that product possesses certain qualities and reputation, due to its geographical origin. This paper analyzes the effect of Korea protected geographical indication (KPGI) on the wholesale price in Garak market using a hedonic price model. The analysis is conducted on fresh apples that have the implicit price for their characteristics. The results show that apples registered in the KPGI are estimated to have positive value and it reflects KPGI apples show higher price (1,350won/15kg) than apples not registered in the KPGI. The results also indicate that if KPGI system is robustly established, we can expect market differentiation. The results of this paper could be important information to promote KPGI.
