Analysis for the Effects of a more Strict Version of Current GMO Labeling System on the Domestic Food Industry and Economy

The labeling system for genetically modified organism (GMO) was introduced in Korea 2001, and the government considers a more strict version of the GMO labeling system. This study analyses what economic effects will occur on the domestic food industry and economy when implementing a more strict version of current GMO labeling system. For the analysis, we utilize previous studies for consumers’ willingness to accept the GMO food, a direct survey toward food manufacturing firms which might be seriously affected by the implementation, and a computable general equilibrium model, named Global Trade Analysis Project (GTAP). Here, the scope of the economic effects includes food industry, consumer price index (CPI), gross domestic products (GDP), and etc. Analytical results show that there are costs the implementation might bring as well as benefits consumer might gain, which suggests that we need more debate upon this case with consideration of both possible costs and benefits from the new GMO labeling system.
