외국인 유학생의 학문적 텍스트 쓰기에 대한 진단적 연구 - 학위논문의 언어 특성을 중심으로 -

A Diagnostic Study on the Academic Writing of International Students - Focusing on Linguistic Features of Dissertations -

본 연구는 학문 목적 학습자인 외국인 유학생들의 학문적 텍스트 쓰기를 말뭉치 기반의 통계적 방법을 통해 진단하여 보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위하여 한국인 대학원생들의 석사학위논문 30편과 외국인 유학생의 석사학위논문 30편으로 각각의 형태분석 말뭉치를 구축하여, 두 말뭉치에서 나타나는 언어 특성의 차이를 R 프로그 램을 통해 통계적으로 검증하였다. 본 연구에서 살펴본 언어 특성은 선행연구들을 통해 제시된 한국어 텍스트의 문어성을 변별해 주는 대표적인 언어 특성과 문어 텍스트들 중에서도 학위논문이 갖는 특징적인 언어 특성인 ‘단어 길이, 문장 길이, 장형부정의 사용 빈도, 동사 축약형의 사용 빈도’이다. 연구 결과, 단어 길이에는 두 말뭉치 간의 차이가 확인되지 않아, 같은 분야의 학위논문으로서의 성격을 갖추고 있는 것으로 볼 수 있었다. 한편, 문장 길이, 장형부정 사용 빈도, 동사 축약형의 사용 빈도에는 모두 통계적으로 유의한 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났는데, 외국인 유학생 말뭉치에서는 한국인 대학원생의 말뭉치에서보다 짧은 문장 길이, 낮은 장형부정의 사용 빈도, 빈번한 동사 축약형의 사용이 나타나고 있었다. 본 연구의 결과는 외국인 유학생들의 석사학위논문이 한국어 문어 텍스트로서의 평균적인 문어성을 갖추고 있다고는 할 수 있으나, 전형적인 한국어 학위논문의 장르적 언어 특성을 충분히 만족시킬만한 수준에까지는 이르지 못하고 있다고 해석될 수 있다.

The purpose of this study is to diagnose the academic text writing ability of international students by using corpus-based and statistical methods. For that, we constructed NS and NNS corpus, each with 30 dissertations of Korean graduate students and 30 dissertations of international students, and statistically verified the differences in linguistic features between the two corpus. The linguistic features what we looked into are ‘word length’, ‘sentence length’, ‘frequency of use of long negation’ and ‘frequency of use of contracted verb forms’. The result showed that there was no difference in word length between the two corpus, but there were statistically significant differences in sentence length, frequency of use of long negation and contracted verb forms. In other words, although the dissertations of international students can be said to have an average level of written text, it can be interpreted that it does not reach a level enough to satisfy the linguistic features of a generic Korean dissertations.
