A Comparative Study on Pluriacitivity of Farm Households in Two Rural Villages in Asan City

This study aims at analysing the current situation of the economic activities of farm households through the comparison between two rural villages. It finds out that there is a difference in farming activities in the two villages that is related to the performance of other economic activities of farm households. While the vegetable-centred cultivation region tends to get more income from farming activities and agricultural-related labour than non-farming activities, it tends to be vice-versa in the rice-centred cultivation region. And main reason for conducting non-farm activities is to get additional income for farm household. These findings may imply that the farm households could not be the main actor for current rural development policy in Korea because their economic activities are limited to the small income earning activities. Therefore, if the Korean rural development policy may aim at creating manufacturing and service activities in rural regions and increasing the variety of economic activities in rural economies, it should focus on supporting for non-farming households. It is the similar situation that is happening in the rural development policies in other developed countries.
