Determinants of Technical Efficiency in the Korean Rice Industry

Stochastic frontier Cobb-Douglas production function models are estimated using cross-section data of 2,296 rice production farmers in 1999. Given the specification of a stochastic frontier Cobb-Douglas production function, in which the technical inefficiency effects are specified to be the functions of several explanatory variables, the technical inefficiency of the farms was estimated as about 11 percent. The estimated technical efficiencies of the farmers varied widely, ranging from 29.7 percent to 98.6 percent, with mean value of 89.3 percent. Technical inefficiency is related negatively to farm size, owned/rented land ratio, machinery utilization, while being related positively to several region dummy variables.
