The Political Economy of Korean Beef Import Policy

This study examines the political economic causes that affect that Korean beef imports. The import demand function that includes the political economy variables is modeled. Using the annual time series data for the period of 1976-1999, the beef import demand is estimated. The result suggests that the Korean import demand is not only determined by the market factors such as the international beef price, domestic beef price, and beef stock changes but also affected by the political economic factors such as the geographical intensity of beef production, beef farmer s income, number of beef farms, and the beef self-sufficiency rate.
