This paper compares two methods for the measurement of technical efficiency, stochastic frontier analysis (SFA) and data envelopment analysis (DEA), in relation to outliers. The technical efficiency estimates obtained from both approaches are shown to be very sensitive to outliers. The estimates obtained from SFA are found to be more robust than those from the DEA. These results imply that SFA is more appropriate than DEA for the data that have possible outliers.
