The Welfare Analysis of the Quality Improvement of Hanwoo Beef

This paper analyzes the efficiency of the Korean beef quality improvement policy. The changes in the welfare of the relevant market participants are measured by the standard welfare analysis tool. The results indicate that the consumer surplus of 10.2 billion Won and the producer surplus of 18.8 billion Won can be achieved from the beef quality improvement, if the relevant combination of the elasticities of demand and supply reflects the market correctly. Therefore, this paper suggests that the beef quality improvement policy can become an efficient policy alternative to improve the international competitiveness of the Hanwoo beef industry.
