A Study on the Efficiency of Agricultural Wholesale Market Using Nonparametric Methods

Following the influential work of Farrel(1957) on productive efficiency, a large number of papers have been published on this topic and various aspects of it (Lovell and Schmidt, 1988). The bulk of these papers use a frontier approach in which the best practice frontier is constructed from observations of inputs and outputs. Inefficiency is measured by the extent to which an observation departs from the frontier. This paper attempts to show how DEA(Data Envelopment Analysis), a nonparametric productivity analysis method, to be improve their respective efficiencies and competitiveness. Especially, we measured relative efficiencies Korean property-liability 15 agricultural wholesale market using CCR model, and raised several issues including the cause of inefficiency, benchmarking toward reference set. This method can be easily applied to find all the DEA efficient DMUs that are on a common efficient face as one or more prespecified DMUs. The methodology and the results in this paper may also serve as a useful guideline for agricultural wholesale market to set their respective business strategies.
