Profitability Analysis of Cold Storage Facilities in Apples

Cold storage facilities have been widely disseminated to individual apple farms with the support of Korean government. This may contribute to farm income increase through the sales in short supply. However, any research was conducted to meet the expectation. This paper analyzes the profitability of cold storage facilities in apples using storage and sales record of sample farms in Kyoungbuk and Chungbuk Province. Capital recovery factor method and break-even point analysis were used for the research purpose. The results show that the sale volume of sample farms outperforms the break-even point. The sensitivity analysis with uncertain sales price strongly supports the stability of the break-even point analysis. This implies that the cold storage facilities are profitable and contribute to farm income increase. However, further efforts are needed to increase the storage volumes and to get the higher sales price by analyzing market signals.
