A Survey on the Long-Term Change of Farm Households Debt in Jeonnam Region

The basic objectives of this study are : 1) to analyze the current state of farm househelds debt in rural area in 1982, 1992, 2002, and 2) to make a few suggestion on how this problem of farm households Debt could be alleviated. In order to achieve these objectives, raw data were collected from 258 farming households in 1982, 197 farming households in 1992, 142 farming households in 2002, which were selected based on four criteria : 1) islands, 2) mountainous area, 3) open field area, 4) suburban area. An average amount of farm households debt was 1,664 thousand won in 1982, 8,928 thousand won in 1992, and 30,493 thousand won in 2002 by current price. An average amount of per hectare debt was 1,892 thousand won in 1982, 9,496 thousand won in 1992, and 29,895 thousand won in 2002 by current price. Supply credit was made by institutional credit market system as high as 96.4 percent of total amount and made by non-institutional credit market system as 3.6 percent in 2002. The loan period was centered on short-term loan ; 47.1 percent of those was short-term loan, 37,7 percent of those was long-term loan, 15.2 percent of those was mid-term loan in 2002. Borrowing on purpose was composed of 20.1 percent on capital expenditure,31.8 percent on operating expenditure, and 48.1 percent on farm family expenditure in 2002.
