A Study of Consumption Behavior Considering Adult Equivalent Scales for Urban Households - Food Expenditure and Eating-out Expenditure

The purposes of this study were to estimate consumption expenditure function, to explore the influencing factors on food expenditure and eating-out expenditure considering adult equivalent scales(AES) and to test the statistical model by using the estimated sales. This study used the 2001 Korean Urban Households Expenditure Survey. The results of this study were as follows: First, the consumption expenditures for food and eating-out were each 438,860 won and 186,110 won per month. Second, the consumption expenditure for food was found to be significantly influenced by house ownership, seoul residence, education of the householder, income and AES. And the consumption expenditure for eating-out was found to be significantly influenced by dual income household, seoul residence, income and AES. Third, especially, the composition of the household by age and sex was found to be important factors for explaining household consumption. Thus, to explain household consumption pattern, household composition has to be considered with some other factors such as income, individual characteristics.
