Soybean Farm Business Strategies for Production Expansion

Soybean production shows lower income and more labor input than rice production. These factors prevents farms from increasing the soybean production area. Two measures, profitability increase and labor reduction, are considered for expanding soybean cultivation. The break-even yield of soybean is 242kg/10a for the same rice production income. When the soybean price is 4,000won/kg, the break-even yield will be 200kg/10a. The present soybean production level is only 162kg/10a. It is necessary to choose good arable land and recommended varieties and to input reliable production technologies for the increase of yield. Consumer-oriented commodity differentiation and constitution of producer organization would be helpful for increasing the farm-received price. Scale enlargement and mechanization are inevitable for the labor reduction. Labor input over 2ha is almost same level with rice production even under the present operation system. When seeding machine is introduced, the break-even scale is 0.4ha. And the break-even scale of sorting machine is 28ha.
