Behavior of Rice Farms within the Special Zone for Environmentally Friendly Agriculture in Korea and Japan

The objective of this study is to analyze the behaviors of rice farms within the Special Zone for environmentally friendly agriculture in Korea and Japan using the survey data. The comparative analysis was done on their opinions about designation of the Special Zone for environmentally friendly agriculture, and current situation and future prospects regarding the environmentally friendly farming in rice production. The survey result showed that the opinions on designating the Special Zone for environmentally friendly agriculture, most of farmers in both countries were positively supporting the zoning idea. They were expecting improvements in farm income, and expansion of environmentally friendly agriculture through the designation. In addition, they named environmentally friendly rice as one of profitable crop contributing to farm income mostly. Lastly, the preferable projects to be implemented are in order of improvements of farm income, establishment of direct marketing infrastructure, and expansion of environmentally friendly farming area. According to the analytical result for opinions on both conventional and environmental friendly rice farmers, the production cost and labor hours were turned out to be statistically significant. Besides, the testing results of opinions in the current time period showed that labor hours, yield, selling price, and marketing outlets were to be significantly different between the farmers in both countries. The test results on opinions regarding expected changes in the future, however, showed that there exist differences of statistical significance among labor hours, production cost, yield, and marketing outlets.
