This study provides an overview of different methodologies used by state agencies of U. S. to estimate the impact of travel and tourism on their state economies. In addition to cataloging the different methods, this study presents a summary of each of them, and highlights their strengths and weaknesses. Survey results such as annual costs of the economic impact reports, levels of satisfaction with the economic impact reports, and geographic level for which the travel-related measures are estimated, are also included. Pre-tested e-mail questionnaire surveys are conducted to accomplish the objectives of this study and 43 out of 50 states and Washington D. C. responded to the survey. The findings of this study can be used as an example or a benchmarking to tourism research institutions in Korea.
