A Comparison of Farm Management Performances between Diversified Farming and Specialized Farming

The study aims to classify the types of farming and to compare the farm management performances between them. It was specialized farming, semi-specialized farming and diversified farming according to specialized level, evaluated by the ratio of main crop in the total agricultural receipts. We did set that specialized farming was over 75% in the ratio of main crop receipts, semi-specialized farming 50~75 % , and diversified farming less than 50%. According to the Farm Household Economy Survey Report (Korea Statistics Administration, 2004), 46% of agricultural management organization was specialized farming, 37% on semi-specialized farming, and 17% on diversified farming. It showed that most of specialized farming was floriculture, orchard, and livestock farming and younger and large-scale farmers are more likely to be specialized farming. Whereas most of specialized farming showed higher performances within some categories such as income per farm, income per standard-farm-scale, labor productivity, and land productivity. Larger farming scale and more diversified, the performances of paddy farming was higher. Difference of the income per farm in paddy was mai띠y from the farming scale. On the other hand, difference of income per farm in vegetables, orchard, and livestock was high by raising scale as well as specializing.
