A Study on the Rural Labor Change in Jeonnam Region for Twenty Four Years

The basic objectives of this study were : to analyze the current state of rural labor change from 1982 to 2006, and to make a few suggestions on how this problem of rural labor could be alleviated. In order to achieve these objectives, raw data were collected 258 farming households in 1982, 197 farming households in 1992, 142 farming households in 2002 and 123 farming households in 2006, which were selected based on four criteria, namely 1) islands, 2) mountainous area, 3) open field area, and 4)suburban area. The major results of this study could be summarized as follows; ① The number of labor force is decreasing in the rural communities. Besides, the quality of labor force available is deterioration as well in terms of age, sex and educational level. ② Educational and training programs of young people on actual farms are necessary to improve the quality of new farmers.
