An Analysis of Japanese Consumers Preference on the JAS Certification

This paper analyzes Japanese consumers preference on the JAS(Japanese Agricultural Standard) by countries of origin of Mini-tomato. A choice experiment is designed and multinomial logit models were estimated. The results show that Japanese consumers valuate their JAS certification as a important matter. The results also indicate that Korean farmers exporting mini tomatoes to Japan should improve the quality of their mini tomatoes to the level of Japanese products and acquire the JAS certification. Therefore, to promote export of organic foods and agricultural products, the education of production and safety management using the international standards such as JAS should be strengthened by the government. The results of this paper could be an important information to promote the mini tomatoes export.
