A Study on Hairdressers’ Awareness of the Importance of Field Training in Cosmetology License Testing

This study attempted to determine the practicality of field training in a cosmetology license test and investigate its importance by category for 180 hairdressers working in Seoul. It confirmed what is needed and what should be improved in the cosmetology license exam. Among the field training subjects, 49.7% responded that they had additional training for ‘haircut.’ Many of the respondents wanted to have additional field training, which requires diverse skills. In terms of their awareness of the importance of field training by category, there should be additional training on ‘diverse haircut techniques’ and ‘various distribution’ and an education curriculum that is more correlated with field training. In terms of hairdressers’ awareness of field training by their career, as they were less experienced, their awareness of the importance of field training was high, which means that they tend to rely more on their experiences than the field training program for the license test with the passage of time. Therefore, it is necessary to examine this kind of field training program for the efficient use of the license and institutionalize it to make sure that the acquisition of the license is a gateway to expertise.
